A few basic facts about Louisiana. Became the 18th state April 30, 1812. Secession was on January 26, 1861 and Readmitted on July 9, 1868. Capital city is Baton Rouge and nickname is “The Pelican State”. The five largest cities are New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Metairie, and Lafayette.
