ROAD TRIPS, PECANS, & A NEW BOOK!

The great American road trip celebrates the joy of travel. Stephanie Stuckey and I met up on two recent road trips to talk about Stuckey’s famous Pecan Log Rolls and her inspiring new book “UnStuck: Rebirth of an American Icon.”

Back in the 1930’s her grandfather began the Stuckey’s business with the idea that every traveler is a friend. Stephanie is now Chair of the company and champions that idea and the brand with grit, grace, and goodness. Road trips, pecans, and a new book … all wonderful ways to embrace life!

Natural Georgia, so calming!

GEORGIA ROOTS & ROAD TRIPS

Stuckey’s was founded in Eastman, Georgia, where Stephanie and I both had family roots and fond childhood memories. Some of those memories included picking and shelling pecans to put into all sorts of delicious, sweet treats. On a recent Georgia road trip, I stopped often to photo beautiful scenes of meadows full of colorful flowers. I meandered all along U.S. Highway 221 and stopped to see the Stuckey’s Candy Plant in Wrens, Georgia.

Can’t you just taste THIS right now? So good!

ON A ROLL … OF PECANS

At the Candy Plant in Wrens, you will find plenty of Stuckey’s Original Pecan Log Rolls. The nougat center is mixed with maraschino cherries, dipped in buttery caramel, then hand-rolled in pieces of Georgia pecans. Georgia has consistently been among the top four growers of pecans for about twenty years. Stuckey’s also makes several varieties of pralines, brittle, and chocolate pecans. They are available in boxes, bags, or gift tins.

EXCITING AUGUSTA & NEW BOOK

Augusta is called the Garden City of the South and is best known for the Master’s Golf Tournament and being the birthplace of singer James Brown. This  city is full of charm, history, museums, fountains, and fun. In April I went there to meet Stephanie Stuckey in person for the first time. The day began with a gorgeous sunrise. I watched as Stephanie wrote sweet personal notes to folks who got her new book. We had shared emails and phone calls for three years before finally meeting in person to discuss road trips, pecans, and her new book. Here’s a link to the FIRST article I wrote about Stephanie; https://embracesouthernstates.com/smart-plucky-stephanie-stuckey/ .

Before leaving Augusta, I took time to enjoy the Riverwalk and a large variety of ornate clocks and fountains.

“UnStuck: Rebirth of an American Icon” is excellent!

THREE MONTHS LATER

Stephanie Stuckey loves road trips. She also enjoys collaborating with other brands. So, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that she  would be making a short stop in Tallahassee promoting both the Stuckey’s snacks and the Georgia Peach Truck. In July I watched as the peaches were being unloaded at Tallahassee Nurseries. I enjoyed taking photos on the grounds that cover about ten acres.

Once again Stephanie and I celebrated road trips, pecans, and her new book. She and her partners have brought the Stuckey’s brand back into turning a profit. She has fully embraced both the entrepreneurial journey and the great American road trip. Readers of the new book will be moved and motivated by this unconventional dynamo who has made sure new generations can enjoy Stuckey’s along their own wonderful road trips.

Honeymoon Joy & Wonder in Georgia

Did you know that there are beautiful and unexpected things which evoke joy and wonder in Central and South Georgia? This travel writer is a true Southerner and has lived in six southern states. So, when I recently married Tony, a man from New Jersey, I wanted to take him on a lovely honeymoon road trip to places he had never been and would never forget. Honeymoon joy and wonder in Georgia is possible, keep reading for details.

Windsor Hotel

This historic hotel opened in 1892,  has won numerous awards for hospitality and preservation, and is on the National Historic Register. It has welcomed two American presidents, one Romanian president, numerous celebrities, musicians, and sports figures. Located in Americus, Georgia, it is a great hub for area exploration.

Georgia heart pine, Italian marble, and hand-carved golden oak combine to create a spectacular lobby. The breath-taking influences of Moorish, Islamic, and High Victorian in architecture and design are grand and luxurious.

Lovely evening view of lobby at Windsor Hotel in Americus.

Two of the suites are in a magnificent circular tower. We stayed in one of those wonderful circular rooms, the Carter Presidential Suite. And, yes, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn have stayed there. I mailed a sweet letter to the Carters a couple of weeks before the honeymoon…find out what happened at the end of this article!

Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant

After checking in, our first stop was the hotel’s own gorgeous restaurant. In fact, we were running late for our reservation! But the staff was terrific, and our table was excellent. My husband Tony (I will get accustomed to calling him that) enjoyed the grouper while I savored the salmon.

Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant

I am so drawn to fancy ambiance, and this one includes cream and plum-colored wall panels, red ceiling, perfect white tablecloths, and view of a stunning grand piano complete with a silver candelabra. The simplest things just excite me, like the way the flickering of the little golden candle made my water glass sparkle. There are not enough positive words to say about how much I loved the entire experience of Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant.

Plains & Other Small Towns

What can you expect to see as you leisurely drive all over this section of Central and South Georgia? We thoroughly enjoyed meandering through these six counties: Crisp, Dooly, Dougherty, Lee, Marion, and Sumter. This was at the end of October. The most beautiful sight was large fields of cotton. Some was ready for harvest, while some had just been baled. There were also lots of pecan trees.

In Plains, home of former President Jimmy Carter, we took photos of murals and of the train depot. In towns like Buena Vista and Vienna we delighted in the beauty of the architecture and the nostalgia of those simple small-town vibes. Such sweet variety of honeymoon joy and wonder in Georgia.

Celebrating Art at Pasaquan

How do I even begin to explain or describe the Pasaquan experience? You need to know that Eddie Owens Martin (1908-1986) has been called a visionary, a dreamer, and an eccentric folk artist. He described himself as a creative man, a poet, and a fortune-teller. In a “vision” he saw futuristic beings who told him to build a sort of utopian Shangri-la to be called Pasaquan where he would be “Saint EOM”.

PASAQUAN is a must-see bucket list ART destination!!!

For many years he created concrete statues, mandalas, and various art forms which represented personhood, power, and world peace. Thanks to the Kohler Foundation, Columbus State University, and countless volunteers, Pasaquan has been preserved and is an internationally renowned art site. The current caretaker/tour guide is Charles Fowler. He does an outstanding job of enthusiastically sharing his appreciation for the artist and for this fantastic place. If you have not been, please add it to your bucket list. Any art lover would find a sense of joy and wonder at Pasaquan.

Guide Charles Fowler entertains with fascinating & funny stories.

Celebrating Nature at Radium Springs

In Albany, Georgia, one of the most enchanting places you could ever imagine is hiding in plain sight. Radium Springs is one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. This location has been a sacred ceremonial site for Indigenous people, and later a tourist attraction that included a grand casino.

Is this serenity & healing, or wonder & joy… or all that and more?
Radium Springs photo op of me (Angela).

Today visitors can still enjoy a peaceful and pleasant walk while viewing the fabulous stonework, columns, and trees. While you can’t see the underwater caves, you can see fish swimming in the blue water of the cool springs. Radium Springs has long been known as a place with healing properties, and you just might encounter that same sense of healing and serenity during your visit.

Conclusion

My hope for this honeymoon road trip was that it would be relaxing, fun, and filled with unforgettable beauty, wonder, and joy. The entire trip was awesome beyond expected and we will always cherish those memories. The honeymoon road trip in Georgia was, indeed, filled with beauty, wonder, and joy… plus art, food, nature, and lots of love. Every new experience was just like another dollop of icing atop a yummy cupcake.

We were thrilled the following week to get a note from Jimmy Carter in the mail. That was so sweet and special, like sprinkles of joy on top of that same silly cupcake.

Special wishes from Jimmy Carter !!!

TASTING ART ON A BALCONY

Where can you go in southern Georgia to taste art on a balcony? Here is the intriguing story which leads to an exciting answer!

This balcony is where I want to be.

The old second floor of this historical building (circa 1899) had sat unused for over sixty years. An ambitious young couple poured hours of love and labor into the restoration. They created a boutique hotel and an amazing café that now add a dazzling shine to a delightful corner.

Six elegant rooms with names such as “The Music Room” and “The Library Suite” are waiting for fine folks like you to come curl up in comfy beds. While there, you can enjoy such amenities as a private gym and access to a person concierge.

Brick interior walls add so much character.

Can you believe this place also includes exposed brick interior walls, original oil paintings, and gorgeous antiques? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat yet? Do you want to know whether such a place exists? Who are these people? Where is this building? What’s the deal about a balcony? What’s the part about tasting art?

Who are these people?

Tyler & Heather started new family & new business.

The young couple is Tyler and Heather Thomas. A few years ago, they moved to a small town in the state of Georgia. The population was only around 12,700. This did not deter them from starting both a family and a business there. That business, located on a beautiful town square, is a restaurant named The American.  It has thrived and set a new standard for extraordinary fare made from scratch daily. This encouraged them to take on an even more daunting opportunity.

Where is this building?

So much to discover in historic Bainbridge, Georgia.

In the southwestern corner of the state of Georgia, you will find the town of Bainbridge. This is where U.S. Highways 27 and 84 meet the Flint River. At the corner of W. Water Street and N. Broad Street you will discover a captivating historic town square named Willis Park which opened to the public in 1904.

Hotel crowned with gold is SO VERY worth your visit!

Across the way is the newly restored and opened Willis Park Hotel. This wonderful white building is accented with silver and crowned with gold. While the address is 129 E. Water Street, the best entrance is found around the corner on Broad and is well marked.

What about the balcony?

Balcony view only hints to the town’s charm.

This talented Thomas couple seems to have quite the knack for restoration and adding just the right aesthetic touch. They were convinced that this corner would benefit from a balcony. And right they were, this is the best place from which to view the pleasant and picturesque historic downtown with its quaint town square. As you take in the charm, you see fabulous architecture, church steeples, statues, and even a gazebo.

What about tasting art?

You need to experience Cafe Sinclair… soon!

Café Sinclair is the perfect spot for breakfast waffles and eggs or a sandwich or fruit tart for lunch. I really LOVE those cute fruit tarts.

Could a fruit tart be art? Yes, I guess!

It is also a classy place that hosts “Meet the Artist” from time to time. The first one featured Melissa Mills and was a huge success. This evening event combines a casual mingle with a swanky soiree and the result is a super combo of art and culture. There are even copycat cookies by Crumby Couture that replicate works of art…that you can EAT. So, food as art meets art as food! I love that so much! Tasting art on a balcony is a real thing!

Ever Heard of Rabun County, Georgia?

The mountains in the state of Georgia are an ideal place to breathe fresh air and allow yourself to completely relax. Up in the northeastern corner you will find Rabun county filled with tiny towns that are packed with beauty.

What is there to do in a tiny mountain town? In Rabun county you can find cozy rental cabins, lovely lakes, and tons of outdoor area to leisurely explore and photograph. Or if you prefer a more active and physical adventure, then hike, bike, climb, camp, fish, and swim to your heart’s content.

Still not enough? How about checking out some of the numerous community markets, wineries, distilleries, and golf clubs? Now that is guaranteed to keep you as busy as you want to be for as long as you wish to be. Here are a few suggestions to ponder as you plan your road trip to Rabun county, Georgia.

From 9am until 2pm every Saturday (May through October) the Community Market is your best spot to find all the best stuff from all the best local growers and makers. Find art, crafts, produce, honey, homemade treats, and more than the mind can handle. There is often live music and there is always something for everyone. Located at the pavilion at 201 South Savannah Street in the town of Clayton. Also in Clayton is Moonrise Distillery https://moonrisedistillery.com/ or Kingwood Resort and Winery https://kingwoodresort.com/ or the Proper Pub .

Now let’s say you’d rather start exploring at the very tip top town in this part of Georgia, well that would be Sky Valley. Here you can find the ( https://www.skyvalleycountryclub.com/ ) Sky Valley Golf and Country Club. Lots of artisan shops, restaurants, yard sales, and breath-taking mountain views abound.

Just to the south is Dillard, quite well-known for the Dillard House boarding house and restaurant http://www.dillardhouse.com/restaurant/ . Also has an amazing amount of antique shops. Find a full line of whiskey and bourbon at https://www.rmroseco.com/ R.M. Rose Distillers.

Next little place to the south is Rabun Gap, admittedly one of my favorites. This is where the Sylvan Falls Mill Bed and Breakfast https://www.sylvanfallsmill.com/ will amaze you with their great food and their own private waterfall! Yes, so very awesome.

Well, that is just a sampling of the wonderful and delightful finds in the mountains of Rabun county, Georgia. I wish you happy vacation planning. Do be sure to let me know if you went there and what you liked about it. Thank you.
